Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class is one of the three classes that may use the Express Entry program (EE) for a Permanent Residence (PR) application. This class is available to those who have qualifying work experience obtained in Canada You can apply under the Canadian Experience Class from within Canada, and you may be able to become a Permanent Resident without having to first leave the country.  

Minimum Entry Requirements for Canadian Experience Class

 

To qualify you must have:

  • At least 12 month of skilled work experience in Canada in the last three years before you apply. The work was full-time or an equal amount in part-time
  • Gained your work experience in Canada with the proper authorization
  • Met the language levels needed for your job for each language ability in writing, reading, listening, speaking
  • Planned to live outside the province of Quebec
  Note:   IRPA/ Regulations R 87.1 (3) (a) any period of employment during which the foreign national was engaged in full-time study shall not be included in calculating a period of work experience; (b) any period of self-employment or unauthorized work shall not be included in calculating a period of work experience; and (c) the foreign national must have had temporary resident status during their period of work experience.  

Skilled Work Experience- Canadian Experience Class.

  To be eligible for the CEC, you must prove that you have obtained a minimum of 1 year Canadian skilled work experience within the past three years.  The experience must be according to the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
  • Managerial jobs (NOC skill level 0)
  • Professional jobs (NOC skill type A)
  • Technical jobs and skilled trades (NOC skill type B)
 

Experience includes:

  • 12 months of full time work or equal in part-time
  • at least 1 year (1,560 hours total / 30 hours per week), continuous:
    • full-time at 1 job: 30 hours/week for 12 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
    • equal amount in part-time: 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
    • full-time at more than 1 job: 30 hours/week for 12 months at more than 1 job = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)

National Occupation Code (NOC)

The National Occupation Classification (NOC) is a list of all the occupations in the Canadian labor market. It describes each job according to skill type and skill level. For immigration purposes, these are the main job groups:
  • Skill Type 0 (zero): management jobs
  • Skill Level A: professional jobs that usually call for a degree from a university
  • Skill Level B: technical jobs and skilled trades that usually call for a college diploma or training as an apprentice
  • Skill Level C: intermediate jobs that usually call for high school and/or job-specific training
  • Skill Level D: labour jobs that usually give on-the-job training
  Note - You must show that you did most of the duties set out in the occupational description in the NOC. This includes a substantial number of main duties and all essential ones  

Education for Canadian Experience Class

  There is no education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class; although a certificate from a Canadian qualifying school, a diploma or a degree or foreign education equivalent will help to obtain additional points in the Express Entry System An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) will apply for foreign education. Language Ability for Canadian Experience Class

  The following apply:  
  • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 for NOC O or A jobs
  • Canadian Language Benchmark 5 for NOC B jobs
  • Take an approved language test in writing, reading, listening and speaking
  • Test results must be within 2 years of date of application for permanent residence
 

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be admissible to Canada
  • Plan to live outside the province of Quebec
